Mother Woodside...

Post by Martin »

All,

Over on another thread we are discussing the issue of an installation of a fire pit in the Hang Glider setup area.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9937

The "pit" has raised some very good questions about how do we maintain the site for flying and at the same time share the site with other users? (some would say "abusers"). This might be a bit of cliche' but "Ask not what the club will do for you, but what YOU can do for your club"?

We might like to complain about what the A-hole's (on parade) do to our launch when no one is flying but how much have the individual members done to maintain the site? Frankly, we are just as guilty for beating the hell out of good old Mother Woodside as any of the other users that visit the mountain.

There are exceptions to what I'm going to say as there are people that do take the time to rake up the garbage, repair the road, the burnt carpet and that poor little outhouse but what have YOU done for the site? (And... btw, even tho I don't agree with the fire pit and feel it was installed without understanding the bigger picture, it was done with the best of intentions... most certainly the party in question is probably looking forward to "roasting" me over that pit ?)

There is a small percentage of people that driven by their own ethical values, take the time to pickup the garbage, make repairs and add improvements, none of them are seeking any glory or recognition, they just want to do the right thing.

On the other hand, as a group, a much larger portion of our flying population just march past the issues, head in the clouds thinking only of the flight ahead. To that end, we need to collectively solve the problems our favourite site endures. Much like many backcountry users that have decided that packing more "out" then what they pack "in" is the ethical thing to do.

Woodside needs some attention, we have be using the site without appreciating our obligations. All pilots need to do their part. The club can be the conduit for collective actions but individuals can still contribute.

Perhaps pilots would like to share some ideas on how to improve the site? I have a few ideas but would like to see what others have to say.

You are right Martin, and just a few hrs after you posted this, there is a pic circulating on the internet of a Jeep parked right up on the carpet.
The full flurry of messages and discussion that happened right after that, was incredible, with more or less good result at the end (time will tell)

We are using one of the nicest view point in the valle (same as Bridal lower launch) and it will inevitable the flock of civilians (non pilots) to the area, this is an opportunity to find ways to integrate them to the area as the same time keeping safe space for the pilots to have a safe launch.

Public shaming! I like it... the modern version of a good "stoning"...love it.

Little things make a difference and it is up to us. We are practically permanent residents on the hill, it's up to us to care for Mother Woodside.

One group that gets taken advantage of are the few of us that actually do something for the site. If you fly the site and have never picked up a shovel or brush cutter, picked up garbage or moved hazardous rocks on the road up, shame on you! If our not doing something to improve the site with every visit, shame on you.

Yesterday, I visited launch for the first time in a few months and was impressed with the work that has been done to the front slope. Who ever did the work, great job! Carpet on the front edge of the launch is getting shredded pretty bad but there are obviously a few good pilots out there doing plenty of good for all of us.

The road up the mountain is getting pretty beat, still, as back country roads go, Woodside still has a solid road bed. If your driving up and you come across a real crank buster boulder... don't just drive around it, move it off the road, If the road is getting chewed badly in areas where this allot of drainage , try to get loose stuff of the road and keep the ditches clear.

Road into launch has some serious challenges. Again, a little bit of fill and TLC can't hurt but eventually we will need to get some equipment on it.

A good example of some TLC, there is a small swamp that forms every year on the road in. A low spot fills with water making it a bit of a challenge for hiking in. I took 10 min with a shovel to help drain the swamp (something apparently D Trump was unable to do?).

As to the 4x4's and A-holes going up onto launch, we can buttress the approach to launch, modify our trail access but this would take some equipment. What won't require equipment is putting up a symbolic effort with some signage. How about a sign posted that Welcomes visitors to launch? (yes... I know, it will get shredded and shot up but perhaps it could help?). Something along the lines of:

"Welcome to Woodside! PLEASE! Enjoy the View!"
"Please no fires or motor vehicles beyond this point"
"Thank YOU!"

After that... we publicly stone them

Cheers

We are working on one as we speak, Ali is waiting on word from the Printer, it will be up there shortly.

More carnage on Woodside....

(Positive Carnage that is  )

Thanks to Fly BC for stepping up with plan to reduce the issue of the 4x4 "A-hole's" from ripping up the launch... Thanks!

I've contacted the Fraser valley mountain bike association who is in charge of developing the trail network on Woodside. Generally just gathering information of thier plans and relay the information back. Perhaps there's the potential for a parking lot in the cutblock to the North of launch. It would be a good starting point for them and could allow us to deactivate the 4X4 attraction before launch. Obviously I'm aware that we do not want our elderly packing thier ATOS a long distance to launch. 😂 But making an easier spot for people to build thier fires away from our launch would be a good idea. If we are bringing in a machine to do work it may be time to look at how much work it would be to improve the North side of launch for two slots.

Huge shout out to Jim/Flybbc for getting those rocks back in place!

Martin, totally agree and thanks for the road report/swamp drain :). It's easy sometimes to forget the heavy lifting is mostly done by a small group of dedicated volunteers. The more pitching in, the lighter the load and better experience for everyone. We've got a sign made up. Ali (new event's director) did an top-notch job, they're cheap and replaceable. I'd like to get similar ones for other WCSC sites. Not a panacea by any means but every bit helps.

Denny - great ideas and thanks for the phone call the other day to share. Thanks for staying on top of that stuff. Any opportunity to develop a direct hike n fly trail to launch?

Update for launch, Mia and I installed the clubs new "Welcoming" sign.
Small New Sign.jpg
Found a gap in the two of the big rocks in the "Tank Trap", Used a bag of concrete to hopefully keep the pole in place. Lets see how long it lasts.
(Thanks to Ali for the beautiful looking sign)

Also, well cleaning up, Mia raked up about 10 pounds of nails from the parking lot burn spot....

If there are any winter flying addicts heading up in the near future, please keep an eye out for issues with the main road, from top to bottom we have started to loose allot of the designed cross/drainage ditches. If you spot sections where the water is not getting off of the road, try to get the flow diverted back into the drainage.

Cheers

Thank you Martin and Mia, I hope it last.

Now about improvements to the launch, where do we want to put the Chalet for pilots and the swimming pool??
