Spot page

Post by Peter Spear »

Many pilots are flying with spots now. They offer a great search and rescue option if you push the SOS button. They also let you send pre-configured text messages to friends which is pretty good so long as you setup the list of friends before hand. The live tracking is not quite so well implemented since anyone who wants to know where you are would need to know a cryptic URL that links to your spot page. I haven't figured out how to search for users in these spot pages. I suspect that you can't do it.

If someone doesn't show up at the end of the day, and you don't know their shared spot page URL, there is not much you can do.

Dave Wheeler, a Seattle area pilot, has a great solution. He created his own spot pages using data extracted from the spot servers. There are separate pages for groups of pilots from various different regions and he has now added a Canadian group.

Post a reply here or PM me if you want to be added to the list. Please include the URL for your shared spot page.

Cheers
Peter

PS Buy Dave a beer if you see him!

Yeah if you don't email these Spot pages to people the addy's are hard to search for. Nic has a link on her blog and some people use facebook.

But having multiple pilots in one place is a great idea. Especially when searching in the field on a flaky data connection.

Peter, saw the donate button (http://xcfind.paraglide.us/) and was trying to figure out who was getting the coin... Is it still Dave doing the work? Looks like we need a few more Canadians to add onto the list.

Thanks

Yes it's still Dave Wheeler doing the various SPOT groups...he recently changed servers to accommodate the increase in users. The $ goes towards paying his annual fee for the server upgrade, and he keeps anything leftover. I find a very good value given the ease of finding everyone's page now; I donated $20 again this year.

Is there a way to remove the banner on
The left side of the display. It covers 1/2
The map. Well 1/3 if you turn your phone
Sideways, but removing it would be nice.

While looking at individual SPOT pages, there is a button to minimize the left-side. See photo below. Reclick the button (which migrates to the far top left corner) to bring the left sidebar back.

Nicole, not sure but I think Ross is referring the to "XCfind" page, does not appear to be a way minimize the pilot selection section and it does make it difficult to use the map.... then again, i'm on a Blackberry that uses "tubes and valves".... not exactly suited to displaying web pages.

Yes I was refering to the xc find Canada page,

With the "spot" page one can hide the menu bar
But it seems I can not hide the menu bar
With the xc find page. This is ok with the ipad
As it only takes up 1/5 the display, but it takes up
1/2 the display on the iPhone.

I didn't know blackberries had a display
Aren't they just mainly buttons?

Hi Ross

The xc find Canada page is run by Dave Wheeler, a pilot in Seattle. He's a super nice guy. I'm sure he would be happy to help - even more so if you send a donation his way.
