Your Compass and Flying in Clouds....

Post by Martin »

Thought I would post this safety comment on the use of a compass for dealing with inadvertent flight in a cloud. The conversation started on another thread involving Transport Canada and the compass requirement (where I personally believe the use of the compass should be replaced with a "and or, working gps"... )

I was inspired to post this based on a paraglider pilot that suggested the magnetic compass had been a helpful tool when it came to helping get out of a cloud. Like many others, I have also inadvertently entered the "white room" . My key reason for posting is the concern that the pilot suggested a confidence that a magnetic compass was useful and help them get out of a difficult situation.

To be clear, (and to make my lawyers happy).... it is illegal for us to fly in clouds if we can not meet TC requirements . Know and understand the regulations!

I highly recommend all newer pilots reach out to their mentor's, instructors or simply any of the old time pilots, you should easily be able to find stories of frightening adventures into to clouds... even the briefest adventures into clouds can end in disaster (like the two comp pilots at Grouse Mountain, many years back, flew into a cloud and both came down under parachute... after a midair!).

Give some of the following videos a watch, then add to discussion...

The following are pretty "dry", typical aviation stuff but some interesting facts about turning an the use of a magnetic compass.

Again, "dry" but some interesting in flight real examples of how a proper aircraft "Whiskey Compass" works... (unlike the key chain compass junk that many pilots use to comply with TC requirements ;-) )
