Quietly behind the scenes....

Wanted to say thanks to the various people in the local flying community that have being doing the stuff behind the scenes that make flying better for all! Saw one of the local money grubbing commercial "capitalistic" paragliding schools just had a major operation improving the launch carpet at Wood...

Re: Spot Owners....

Some additional feedback on the Spot Gen3 Tests and a few extra comments. I have heard back from several other owners who performed the tests and all were successful. Since I'm not on Social Media, I don't have any additional followup from the incident in Washington State other than a note that one ...

Re: Spot Owners....

For anybody that takes the time to test their Spot's, please post your experience with the process and if you had any issues (or not). I would also encourage owners of the Garmin InReach to also test their devices and maybe give some feedback on the experience and results here on the forum. The inte...

Re: Spot Owners....

Good point on the contact settings, the Geos people will ask if you want the SOS message information reviewed, they read back what I had in the system for information (Glider/Ham frequencies/contacts and so on...)

Re: Spot Owners....

Follow-up.... Just ran SOS tests on both of my Gen3 units and both passed, from pushing the SOS button to confirmation. The procedure to test is not so straight forward but understandably so. If you call Spot you will be given a number to call GEOS, the systems operating center (1-888-460-4554). The...

Re: Spot Owners....

Spot, Cracks in the system? Must admit I'm reflecting on the use of my Spot as a SOS device. There are a few reports out there of failed SOS activation , (One recently, in the Backcountry of Mount Baker in Washington state). To be clear, every device out there is subject to failures of the system/de...

Re: Why we fly...

Funny how the imagery of chaos, hyperventilating head game comp crowds is matched to the narration of being "one" with the air in the open and limitless sky.... I have always found that crowds and congestion drain my sole and passion for this sport. Fortunately i get it all back on those days when m...

Injured Hang Glider.....

Not likely they have any of this right but (because the "news" is no longer required to be correct or factual.....) https://globalnews.ca/news/4851993/injured-hang-glider-airlifted-from-okanagan-mountain/ Hope the "hang glider" is repairable.... I guess they just left the pilot behind? Comrade Martin

Old School.....The Canadian-hgpghistory blog....

For the Hang Glider pilots that are out there lamenting the past, Stewart Midwinter has launched a Canadian Hang Gliding and Paragliding history blog:

https://canadian-hgpghistory.blogspot.com/

Dig out the old photos and send him some short stories from those foggy old'n days!

Cheers

Re: Can Hang Gliding be saved?

Typical Hang Glider pilots, half demented, wallowing around in the foggy olden days.... everything all blurry and hard to recall, as if looking through the dozen empty "stubby's" left sitting on the table at bar after another night of old school death and glory stories.... https://lh3.googleusercont...

Re: Can Hang Gliding be saved?

One thought that did just strike me about the sport locally is that you could make friends with the gliderport at Hope, that might give you some towing (or do they winch?) and on-site storage options. Potentially no truck needed. (Tom, simply for "sport" I'm not done sarcastically kicking this thre...

Re: Can Hang Gliding be saved?

Maybe the reason you sport is dying is that you think its fine the way it is and discourage any attempts to change it, irrespective of whether anyone else agrees with you. I no longer care about pilots sniveling about this self inflicted gun shot wound. Truth is, big picture here.... It's society t...

Re: Can Hang Gliding be saved?

Hang-gliding is mostly a sport of middle aged (or older) white men. And your slowly dying out. What a pile of insulting drivel... last time I checked, none of my PG buddies are getting any younger, in fact everyone of us are just walking compost wishing we had worshipers for our "new religion". As ...
