Bridal Falls Air Races - Competition Information

For those flying without GPS (vario stats only)

- Maximum Time Aloft
- Highest Altitude
- Fly Exactly 1 Hour (one flight from launch to landing)
- Longest Time Kiting
- Fastest Time through kiting "Obstacle Course"

 

For those flying with GPS

- Pilots may fly open distance, out and returns, or triangle tasks as the pilot chooses.
- Triangle tasks should conform to the 28% FAI ruling ie. The shortest leg should be at least 28% of the total distance of the triangle, and the angles of the triangle should be no less than 28 degrees.
- A multiplier of 1.33 will be awarded to out and return tasks, and a multiplier of 1.5 will be awarded to triangle tasks.
- Pilots flying out and returns or triangle tasks must complete at 50% of the final leg of their task in order to qualify for the multiplier. Incomplete out and returns or triangles will receive straight line credit along the route flown, including turn points.
- The final score for each pilot will be determined by scanning his/her best 2 flights. Pilots may make more than one flight each day but only one flight per pilot will be scored each day.
- Match races (with GPS): - depending on pilot interest -
  a) Challenge other pilots through registering
  b) Round-Robin competition eventually getting down to final two pilots
  c) Hourly races (1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm) both days
  d) Between 2 points (TBA)
- All Day Speed Trials: - depending on pilot interest -
  a) Fastest time between 2 set points: 1, 2, 5, and 10 km
  b) Number of laps between 2 points (TBA)


Flight Rules

- All flight activity should occur within the existing CYA105.

All pilots must attend a safety briefing at the primary paragliding LZ before flying the Bridal Falls site.   In addition, participating pilots must take part in a pre-flight briefing detailing the specific weather conditions, concerns, tasks, etc., for the day. This briefing may take place in the LZ or at launch.

All flights will be foot launched, from one of two supervised launch sites.

There will be both solo and tandem hang gliding and paragliding flying.

** Solo flights may consist of any of the following (depending on weather conditions):

a) Longest Time Aloft
b) Fly Exactly 1 Hour
c) Highest Altitude Achieved (within the airspace)
d) Cross Country (along ridge, east of west 10-15km, with extreme limits of Elk Mountain to the west, and Laidlaw to the east.
e) Spot landings in designated LZs

Tandem flights will be undertaken by certified Tandem Instructors.
- All activities will be structured so as to enable landings in the designated LZs. No overflying of highway #1 will occur, other than HG pilots crossing on their way to the HG LZ.
- The designated turn direction for all pilots will be announced each day at the pilot briefings.
